The Latin American trio, whose music is a non-genre specific blend of techno, psychedelic and industrial rock, have been critically praised for their music and earned over 20,000 fans through MySpace alone. It would be hard not to tap your feet, let alone stay in your seat, when a Cubiky takes the stage.
Cubiky: Explosive Electronica for the Masses by Raquel Penzo - reporting from New York City Cubiky is Carlos Sotelo (programming, guitar, vocals and keyboards), Trippy Castillo (base, vocals and synthesizers) and Alex Arce (drums, kaoss pad), true music lovers who each moved to Los Angeles with a dream and a demo. The groups March 2007 commercial release through Escuchalo Records, Aura, marks the debut of the latest and last incarnation of Cubiky, which previously included a slew of guest vocalists. Our first [self-titled] album, instead of a band, it was more a collection of musicians, says Sotelo. Theres like six of us [singing on it], and it got difficult to perform that show live. Finally finding musical souls that meshed with his own, Sotelo describes Castillo and Arce as warriors that can take his fledgling song ideas and, in one take, create beautiful music. When I got to be a power trio with Trippy and Alex, the chemistry and the soundit just got to be more fun. And that is exactly what Aura exudes- a fun and energized set list of hard dance beats mixed with techno-rock. [Working on Aura was] the most incredible explosion of energy that weve ever felt. In a time where genre labels are king, Sotelo says finding a fan base for their style was not difficult. Our music is not angry or sad. Its happy dance music that reminds you that you only live once; enjoy it while youre here. With MySpace as a marketing tool, Cubiky has fans all over Latin America and Mexico, as well as in the L.A. alternative music scene. The group has also gotten the attention of the MTV powers-that-be, with the video for their first single off Aura, Pirotecnicas on rotation on MTV3. Directed and conceptualized by up-and-coming Mexican director Sofia Garza, the sexy circus theme offers a complimentary visual to the song. Ombligo, the next video and single to be released, will premiere on MTV3 in the coming weeks. While their exposure to the masses escalates, Cubiky will be continuing their promotional tour in California before moving on to 6 cities in Mexico for 10 days, where they will shoot a third video to be released right away to not lose any time and roll with the momentum theyve earned. And Sotelo, Castillo and Arce are known for putting on an electrifying live multimedia show, but those of us on the east coast will have to wait a bit to experience Cubiky live. In the meantime, we can settle for worshipping them from afar via cyberspace. |
