Comprised of descendants of the legendary Buena Vista Social club musicians, the children and grandchildren of that famous aggregation now have their own opportunity to set the world aflame. Directed and arranged by trombonist Juan Pablo Torres, this near-perfect gem was recorded in Havana. If the Buena Vista Social Club started the fire, this Next Generation has just dumped a truckload of gasoline onto it. This is the stuff of Cuban musical dynamite.
Although the buzz about this project is focused on the Next Generation, great use is also made of seasoned veterans like Jose "Changuito" Quintana, Tatá Güines and Raul Planas (in what must have been one of his final sessions). But it is the intensity and passion fueling the vocals of Maria Elena Lazo and Conchita Torres, the wonderful piano of Rubén Rodriguez Jr., the tres of Pancho Amat, the bass of Lazaro Lopez Cachao and the rest of this vivacious new team that keeps this locomotive rocketing forward.
Listen to the percussion of Emilio Del Monte Jr. on the descarga “Palmira” to get a sense of the explosive energy that this project has in its arsenal. A great tip of the hat is made to the original Buena Vista royalty: a new version of “Chan Chan”. This version was performed by the grandsons of Compay Segundo and it's the perfect “thank you” for planting those seeds years ago.
