Special notes about Beyond Salsa Bass Volume 6 VIDEO (57 video clips total):
** Beyond Salsa Bass follows the same game plan as Beyond Salsa Piano: five volumes covering the history of Cuban bass playing - from changüí and son to songo and timba - followed by a series of books on individual star bass players.
** Video: Alain was filmed with two cameras, one looking directly at him and the other a closeup on his right hand. For every tumbao, we provide three separate videos: a widescreen version of each camera angle and a split screen version combining the two.
The video clips for Beyond Salsa Bass Volume 6 can be purchased on this page.
** Audio: The audio product has the piano alone in the left channel and the bass alone in the right. It includes Alain's slow and fast performances, and the fast performance is also provided in a digitally slowed version. Additionally there are MIDI tracks to accompany the analysis of Alain's style and to cover several auxiliary tumbaos not included in the videos. The eBook and audio clips are sold separately (click here to go to the Beyond Salsa Bass Vol.6 album and eBook page).
** Beyond Salsa Bass Volume 6 is the sixth in a series of instructional methods composed of an eBook with audio tracks. The eBook, audio tracks, and video clips are sold separately.
The eBook is a personalized pdf download compatible with Adobe Acrobat (more eBook info here).
The first volume of Beyond Salsa Bass to be released is Volume 6, the first on Alain Pérez. It corresponds exactly to Beyond Salsa Piano, Vol. 6 on Melón Lewis. Melón and Alain played together in the historic Issac Delgado group of the late 1990s, creating arguably the most sophisticated and ultra-creative piano-bass tandem in the history of Cuban popular music. Volume 6 covers two of Delgado's greatest live timba arrangements: No me mires a los ojos and La vida sin esperanza. The piano and bass parts are drawn from extended live performances at the legendary Palacio de la Salsa nightclub in the Hotel Riviera on the Malecón.
The bass volume transcribes not only the notes but the many percussive sounds that Alain uses to create his powerful groove. He performed each song in slow motion and in various takes at full speed, making full use of the "controlled improvisation" technique that's so central to both his and Melón's styles. Everything he plays is transcribed in 16th notes, 8th notes, and bass tablature. Volume 6 also contains the first part of Alain's biography, covering his early child prodigy years, his "discovery" by Chucho Valdés, and his initial entry into the Issac Delgado group.
Volume 6 of Beyond Salsa Bass begins our 4-volume study of the style of Alain Pérez - the composer of La sandunguita, Salsa timba y amor, and Amigo Juan. Pérez is one of the most talented bassists, composers and arrangers of modern Cuban music. He shared a very unique musical chemistry with Issac Delgado and pianist Melón Lewis, the subject of Volumes 6-9 of Beyond Salsa Piano. The bass series follows the piano series exactly, covering the same songs, now from the perspective of the bassist. In addition to transcribing the notes, we also transcribe the percussive sounds that he uses to create his funky style. Each musical example is provided in 16th note notation, 8th note notion and bass tablature. There are corresponding audio and video products for each volume.
While presented as a set of method books, the series doubles as a history course and record collecting guide for listeners, dancers, and players of instruments other than the bass.
Perhaps the most important goal of the series is to provide a comprehensive understanding of how the bass movements are constructed, their central role in the texture of Latin music of all eras, and the endless possibilities they provide for creative composing and arranging.
