2004 Grammy Nominee! The full title of this album is "Jíbaro Hasta el Hueso: Mountain Music of Puerto Rico by Ecos de Borinquen". Hand-picked group of virtuosic instrumentalists -and featuring the cuatro, a 10 string guitar- perform the "country music" of the island of Puerto Rico.

Founder's note: Listening to this album is a great source of pleasure. The songs are superbly performed and the production quality is top-notch. What is truly remarkable is that only after repeated listenings do you realize that, for a record dominated by stringed instruments, there are barely any STRUMMED PASSAGES. Its all harmonized and contrapuntal single note lines! The puertorican folkloric instrument -a ten stringed (5 doubled, root and octave) small guitar confusingly called the "cuatro" (which means "four")- is played at virtuosic levels. Strumming chords along with the vocals, as it common with folk music, is not applied here, instead there are established sinlge note phrases and riffs that accompany the melody. Very interesting musicologist fare indeed. _Mike Lazarus

ENGLISH: The resurgence of cultural and racial pride in the United States during the 1960s and 1970s had a parallel in Puerto Rico—so much so that today, the mere sound of música jíbara can provoke a cheer of cultural and national pride. In the forward-looking words of the young singer on this recording, Karol Aurora De Jesús Reyes, the music "Will make us shine around the world, until the people hear the music and say, 'Look, that is the music of Puerto Rico.' It's the music of my country, that which represents us and that which identifies us as a people." Leader Miguel Santiago Díaz hand-picked this group of virtuosic instrumentalists to let the music to shine at its brightest.

Grammy Nominee 2004! This album download includes the full 20-page CD booklet with back cover and the complete lyric sheets with English translations.
